This is a very interactive module that is designed to foster integration of the history, examination, diagnosis and resulting decision-making process for case management. Students are initially placed in teams, each receiving a brief history of injury. Working together, each team develops the history by asking pertinent questions of the "patient," decides which exam procedures to perform and, utilizing the data obtained, produces a differential diagnosis. Following each team "orders" the appropriate special tests (see below). In this way, the entire critical thinking process is developed and learned by each practitioner. This module should provide the participant with a higher level of confidence in patient decision-making and case management.
Participants will also hear from multiple guest lecturers in this module. Such topics include:
- Demonstration and discussion in the use of NCV/EMG testing.
- A pain management expert will discuss the appropriate use of common injection "block" procedures, such as epidurals, facet blocks, selective nerve root blocks and discography.
- Other lecturers may present.
Special tests include:
Structural Tests
Functional Tests
Computerized Functional Test (Range of Motion, Strength, Lifting, Grip, Pinch, etc.)
Functional Capacity Evaluations
Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV)
Electromyography (EMG)
Doppler Ultrasound
Laboratory Tests (Blood, Urine, etc.)
