This module reviews various practice management ethics and takes an in-depth look at the western model of evaluation and patient management.
 
Practice management includes:
  • Fee-setting
  • Ethical office procedures
  • Documentation (e.g. SOAP notes, intake forms)
  • Managed care principles
  • HIPAA
  • How to produce a viable budget for your practice.
  • How to market yourself to other health professionals.

The western model includes:

  • How to take a history.
  • How to perform a physical examination, which may include:
    • Inspection
    • Palpation
    • Range of Motion (active and passive)
    • Strength (Manual Muscle Testing)
    • Orthopedic tests
    • Neurological evaluation
  • Diagnosis:
    • Once this information is gathered, we learn how to produce a differential diagnosis. To confirm or rule out the diagnosis list, we look at what types of special tests to order and when to order them:
  • Special Tests:
    • Structural Tests
      • X-rays
      • Computed Tomography (CT)
      • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
      • Bone Scan
      • Myelogram
      • Discogram
      • DEXA studies
      • PET Scan
    • Functional Tests
      • Computerized Functional Test (Range of Motion, Strength, Lifting, Grip, Pinch, etc.)
      • Functional Capacity Evaluations
      • Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV)
      • Electromyography (EMG)
      • Doppler Ultrasound
      • Laboratory Tests (Blood, Urine, etc.)
  • Case Management
    • Decision making on immediate care.
    • Referral for treatment and/or consults.
    • Long-term treatment plan.
    • When to re-evaluate.
    • Lifestyle restrictions.
  • Documentation
    • How to put it all together in a chart note that will stand up to utilization review.
